Can shutters be fitted to any window?

As shutters become more popular, the demand is increasing and as shutter suppliers and installers we are often asked the question "Can shutters be fitted to any window?".

The answer may seem a bit of a paradox. In theory shutters can be fitted to almost any window. In practice there are some limitations.

Most homes in Britain are able to have shutters fitted so if you are thinking about getting some, chances are you can. Even circular or triangular windows can be catered for.

Reasons shutters shouldn't be fitted:

When the shutter frame impedes the opening of windows (assuming you want to open those windows), this can happen with windows that tilt inwards.

There are usually work arounds such as reducing the frame width or having the frame outside the recess but sometimes there just isn't room if the window is very close to a wall.

If the wall and recess are very irregular.

Small irregularities can usually be overcome with a bit of scribing or sanding of the frame to fit the opening or wall. With large variations in stone or plaster, such as those found in extremely old properties, even if the shutters can be fitted, the result may not be very aesthetically pleasing.

The spaces are too big.

In order for modern shutters to work well there are size limitations. Large spans requiring bifolding doors may be over the limit for weight, causing sagging as the hinges are under too much strain. Most houses would not have that problem though.

The windows are too small.

Whilst small solid shutters could be made to fit, shutters with moveable louvres won't work because there simply isn't enough room. There is usually a minimum width for louvred shutters around 25 cm.

Other factors such as unsound walls or plaster, not enough room to open the shutters or louvres or having them too close to a source of heat like metal stovepipes could be reasons not to have them installed.

Fortunately we check these things on our free in-home appointments and advise accordingly. We prefer happy customers so we are upfront about any foreseeable issues rather than just getting the job.

Things to bear in mind when thinking about the practicalities of shutters:

- modern shutters consist of a frame with hinged doors and, apart from the solid door shutters, louvres that open to control light and privacy, enough space should be available for them to move

- the frame can be installed within the recess or fitted to the surround outside the recess (what we call face fit)

- shutters last a very long time, this depends on the materials they are made from, wood is usually the most enduring

- louvres can be broken with impacts such as balls thrown/kicked hard or large dogs jumping up on them (whilst we offer replacements we cannot guarantee colour matches)

Shutters are popular for many good reasons. They are sturdy, great at controlling light and privacy, they help to regulate temperature and sound, are very easy to keep clean, may be the only solution for awkward windows and best of all they look neat, blending in with modern or traditional building and decor styles.
