How do I clean my shutters?

One of the advantages of having shutters at your windows is that they need very little maintenance compared to other types of window covering such as blinds or curtains.

This makes them a no-brainer choice for homes, especially for anyone who suffers from asthma or allergies to dust.

Maintaining and cleaning plantation shutters is easy to keep them looking beautiful and functioning properly without causing any damage.

Here are some useful tips to help you maintain and clean your plantation shutters effectively:

  1. Regular Dusting: Dust your plantation shutters regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt and debris. Use a dry microfibre cloth or the soft-bristled brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust from the slats or louvres.

  2. Spot Cleaning: For minor stains or spots, dampen a soft cloth with water and gently wipe the affected areas. Dry with another soft, clean cloth. Avoid using abrasive sponges or squeegees, as they can damage the finish of the shutters.

  3. Deep Cleaning: For a more thorough clean, mix a small amount of mild dish soap with warm water and use a soft cloth to clean the entire surface of the shutters, including the frame and hinges. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft towel to prevent water spots. We advise this not be done too often as the finish can be affected, if you follow the first two steps regularly then there shouldn't be a build-up, but you may move into a home where previous residents haven't kept up with the cleaning etc. and deeper cleaning is necessary.

  4. Avoid Excess Moisture: Plantation shutters are made of wood or synthetic materials that can warp or become damaged if exposed to excess moisture. When cleaning, avoid saturating the shutters with water, and always dry them thoroughly after cleaning to prevent moisture buildup. We suggest drying your shutters after showering etc. if water drops are visible.

  5. Use Dryer Sheets: To help repel dust and keep your shutters looking cleaner for longer, wipe them down with a dryer sheet after dusting. The anti-static properties of dryer sheets can help reduce static electricity and prevent dust from clinging to the surface of the shutters. Especially effective on polyvinyl shutters that tend to be more prone to static build-up.

  6. Inspect for Damage: Periodically inspect your plantation shutters for any signs of damage, such as loose or broken slats, damaged hinges, or worn-out components. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the longevity of your shutters.

  7. Lubricate Hinges: If you notice any squeaking or difficulty in opening and closing the shutters, apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the hinges to keep them operating smoothly. Avoid using oil-based lubricants, as they can attract dust and dirt.

By following these tips, you can keep your plantation shutters clean, well-maintained, and looking beautiful for many years to come.
