Shutter Blinds for keeping in heat, do they work?

Whether you call them 'shutter blinds' or just shutters, many people are asking if they can help to keep rooms warmer in winter.

We are delighted to tell you that according to university studies in conjunction with English Heritage they do!

There are a few different types of shutter and we supply them all.

Solid shutters used to have the highest efficiency at keeping in the heat but now we also supply shutters with a honeycomb blind behind the doors. This double layer has been found to have an efficiency of over 62%. Solid door shutters are around 62% and louvred shutters are just over 50%.

These have to be full-height shutters. Cafe-style shutters stop part way up the window and do not make much difference.

Shutters keep the layer of cold air next to the window by acting as a barrier. Windows usually feel cold in the winter and when the warmer air in the room comes into contact with the glass it cools down, making it harder for heating to maintain temperature and increasing bills.

By installing full-height shutters and closing the louvres, the mixing of warm and cool air is reduced, thereby keeping the room warmer.

In summer the opposite happens and shutters can keep your home cooler, as well as keeping out sharp sunlight when you want to sleep, watch tv or work on a computer.

Of course, if you have single-glazed windows it is even more desirable to have shutters to help with heat loss. Solid shutters or shutters with built-in blinds will be the most effective but you could team shutters with lined curtains too.

Shutters are typically made of mdf, various types of polymer (plastic or vinyl) or solid wood.

Here at Country Home Shutters we stay away from mdf and are usually able to supply solid wood for the same price as mdf from the large suppliers. We use polyvinyl (not plastic) shutters for bathrooms and moist environments. (Please see our other articles for the reasons we don't use certain materials)

All our shutters are tailor-made for each window. They are manufactured in controlled conditions and fitted by experienced installers. We believe in giving outstanding service and this is reflected in our many five star reviews. Being an owner-run business means we take immense pride in the quality of products and service. If there are any problems, thankfully rare because we run a tight ship but sometimes things don't always run to plan, you can speak directly to the owner.

No waiting ages to get through to call centres and feeling like just a number.

Much of our business comes from word of mouth so that should tell you something.

We believe in keeping you informed with updates and news regarding orders and fitting, we have been told by our customers that this makes us stand out from most other companies and gives them peace of mind.
