How to buy DIY shutters

Updated: Jul 17, 2023

The rapid rise in popularity of window or plantation shutters means that so many people want them but don't always have the budget for a fully measured, manufactured and installed service. Hence the availability now of shutters that can be ordered direct for do-it-yourself installation. But how easy are they to install?

It goes without saying that in theory, shutters should be straightforward to install. They really only consist of a frame with some doors in them that just happen to have louvres. However, there are a few things to bear in mind.

  1. Outside of recess frames are easier to fit and look neater.

  2. Measuring your window recess accurately is extremely important.

  3. Having the drill and bits compatible with what you are drilling in to - DIY videos make it look easy to drill into the recess but beware of crumbling plaster, hard concrete, brick, low spec plasterboard, metal RSJ's and rotting wood.

  4. Uneven recess or sill - most recesses will NOT be squared and sometimes the extent is only noticeable when trying to fit a square frame, this makes installation extremely time-consuming and the result not always as expected.

  5. Some DIY products are made of inferior materials and may be thinner in order to keep prices lower. So, although you are saving pennies in the short term, the product may not last or look or operate as well as expected.

  6. There is no refund. If you haven't measured correctly or ordered the right door configuration you can't get your money back.

  7. The frame has to be hung completely level and upright or the doors will not open and shut properly. Because shutters have clean, straight lines, any variation is immediately noticeable. This often gives away the fact that it hasn't been properly or expertly installed (something you don't have to worry about if you have an all-inclusive service as there is usually a workmanship guarantee from respectable suppliers).

  8. Unless you have joinery experience and a comprehensive toolkit, anything but a straightforward, outside-of-recess fit shutter should be left to professionals.

  9. You get what you pay for. Cheap is not always worth the price or the hassle.

  10. DIY shutters are usually noticeably different to installed ones so mixing them in the same room is probably not a good idea.

  11. Professionally supplied and fit shutters should last decades if not a lifetime.

So there you are, DIY shutters have their place in the market and may be your only option if budget is a factor. Just be aware of the limitations, oh, and its probably a good idea to purchase the correct wall plugs, screws and fixings for your walls separately. The ones supplied may not be suitable.
